Why a blog?
The Writing Center Blog is launching in August 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic. This year, digital conversation matters more than ever. Even though all Writing Center consultations have moved online, we’re still committed to the same hospitality you’d experience in person. This blog is another way of extending that hospitality, of connecting from a distance.
What do we write about?
All of our posts aim to:
- Empower students to communicate their thoughts through clear, charitable writing.
- Target specific issues student writers face.
- Foster a community of writers on campus.
To that end, we’ll publish weekly blog posts about some of the following topics.
1. Writing Process
Brainstorming, drafting, editing, revising—there are dozens of ways to approach each step of writing an essay. These blog posts will highlight student-tested methods to take papers from start to finish.
2. Writing Center
These posts are designed to help visitors maximize their visits to the Writing Center. Our consultants—many of whom are also frequent visitors of the Writing Center—will explain how all kinds of writers can use our services in any stage of the writing process.
3. Research
Although the internet hosts boatloads of information, it’s hard to find the sources you need—or to know what to do with them when you find them. We want to help you get to know the citation styles, library resources, and research databases for your major.
4. Writing at Wheaton
Campus publications, writing contests, and special library collections make Wheaton College an environment where student writers can flourish. This category contains posts that are Wheaton-specific.
5. Professional Development
From on-campus employment to future careers, writing forms an integral part of many vocations. We’ll showcase stories of how writing skills have helped students and alumni in professional settings.
6. Book Reviews
If you love to write, chances are that you love to read. Sometimes, we’ll share some of our favorite books about writing, or we’ll review books that feature exemplary writing.
